The Petalioi Gulf: A Hidden Corner of the Aegean
The stretch of water between southern Euboea and the Attica coast — calm, clear, and almost entirely off the tourist circuit.
Most people can name the Saronic Gulf, the Corinthian Gulf, the Aegean. Few have heard of the Petalioi Gulf — the stretch of water nestled between the southern tip of Euboea and the eastern coast of Attica. Seaside FC Villa sits directly on its shore.
What makes it different
The Petalioi Gulf is sheltered. The islands of the Petalioi group — a scattering of small, mostly uninhabited landmasses — act as a natural breakwater. The result is water that's almost always calmer than the open Aegean, even when the meltemi is blowing elsewhere.
The depth drops off quickly from the shore, making the water a deep, saturated blue rather than the pale turquoise of shallow sandy bays. Visibility underwater is excellent.
The Petalioi islands
Visible from the villa's terrace on clear mornings, the Petalioi islands are accessible only by private boat. The largest, Megali Petalia, has a seasonal lighthouse and that's about it. Smaller islets are completely uninhabited — some with perfect small beaches. Local fishermen know them well. If you're chartering a boat for a day, these are worth the detour.
Wildlife
The gulf is a transit route for migratory birds in spring and autumn. Dolphins appear occasionally, usually in early morning. The rocky sections of the coast host urchins and octopus in the shallower water — worth checking before you put your feet down.
Sailing and boating
Several small marinas operate in the area. Marmari, to the south, has a proper harbour and fuel. Day-boat hire is available in Nea Styra during the season — a useful way to reach the Petalioi islands without needing your own vessel.
Swimming conditions
The gulf's calmness makes it ideal for swimming from early June through October. Water temperatures peak in August (around 27–28°C) and remain comfortable through late September. The private beach at Seaside FC Villa is directly on the gulf — within walking distance of the villa, no driving required.
The view
At dusk, with the lights of Agia Marina visible across the water and the sun dropping behind the Euboean hills, the gulf takes on the kind of quality that's hard to photograph accurately. The football pitch floodlights come on, the sea goes a dark indigo, and the only sound is the water.
It's the kind of thing that makes a week feel longer than it is, in the right way.
